Academy reveal coaching opportunities

Your chance to develop the next generation of City talent.

City’s Academy are looking to recruit part-time coaches to deliver programmes for age groups in the under-9 to under-15 bracket.

Working up to 14 hours a week, successful candidates will report directly to the lead phase coach and head of coaching, and be responsible for supporting the running and development of the Academy’s coaching programme.

This will specifically involve supporting and implementing an individually-tailored programme for each player within their specific age group in line with EPPP requirements.

The individual should demonstrate passion, talent and a hunger to work with the youngest players in the Academy.

In conjunction with the Academy director, head of coaching and other Academy coaches, applicants will be required to deliver the programme in line with the Academy’s coaching and playing philosophies.

Successful candidates will be expected to have an in-depth knowledge of all current trends in player-centred coaching and ensure City develop a progressive culture with leading practitioners, as the Academy attempts to develop the next generation of talented players.

The roles involve working in the evenings and on Sundays to suit the Academy’s fixture programme.

It is imperative the individual maintains and develops the City brand both internally and externally.

In addition, there will be large emphasis on leading a team of part-time coaches to ensure they deliver the club’s philosophy, along with a large amount of administrative tasks within the role to ensure the desired criteria of the EPPP Category Two audit is met once again.

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with a thirst to work with elite players and help lay the foundations for the next generation of City the first team squad.

Coaches will need to hold the UEFA B qualification and either hold the FAYA Module 3 or be working towards the qualification.

If you are interested in this role, please e-mail theacademy@bcfc.co.uk with a CV and covering letter explaining why you are suitable for the role by Monday, June 10th.

Successful candidates will be asked to interview, which will be a phased process. Applicants will be invited for a practical delivery session and, if successful, will be invited for a formal oral interview.

Dates are as follows:

Phase 1 – Practical delivery, W/C Monday, June 17th.
Phase 2 – Oral interview, W/C Monday, June 24th.

If you would like any more information about the role, please e-mail marc.canham@bcfc.co.uk.

Charities benefit from Ashton Gate encounter

The Bristol Fans’ Derby raised around £3,000 for the two clubs’ Community Trusts at the weekend.

A healthy crowd watched a close-fought 3-2 win for Rovers over their rivals at Ashton Gate on a hot Sunday afternoon.

City stormed into a 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to goals from organiser Tim Dicks and Scott Murray, who was rolling back the years in midfield.

But Rovers were level at 2-2 by the interval and sealed victory shortly after the restart.

The real winner, however, was Bristol City and Bristol Rovers’ Community Trusts, who benefit from the monies raised.

Vicky Barlow, Trust development officer, said: “It was a fantastic event, played in the right spirit. It was certainly more competitive than in recent years.

“I’d like to thank all the organisers for their time and effort, the supporters who turned up on the day – and we’re now looking forward to making next year’s event even bigger.”

Bristol City Embrace Homeless Project

City’s players engaged in a training session with local homeless people as part of a new Community Trust project.

In a joint partnership with the Homeless FA, City have signed up 15 local people who are all keen to turn their lives around through the power of football.

Head coach Sean O’Driscoll and his assistant Richard O’Kelly put them through their paces before letting the homeless people go head-to-head with the first team squad.

To give the new kids on the block a chance, City fielded just ten players against 15 – and goalkeeper Tom Heaton was thrust up front, with Steven Davies and Matthew Bates taking turns between the sticks.

Gareth Parker, Homeless FA CEO, said: “The Homeless FA supports all initiatives that use football as a means of improving the lives of homeless people in England.

“We believe that every person has the potential to change their lives positively and that football can facilitate such a transformation.

“The opportunity to have a coaching session alongside the stars at Bristol City is a real money-can’t-buy experience. All 15 of those taking part in the project will also get to watch the first team in action against Huddersfield Town this weekend.

“We want them to feel a part of the club and the response from everyone at the club and the Community Trust has been tremendous.”

Vicky Barlow, Community Trust development officer, said: “This was the first day of the project and everyone had smiles on their faces. The players were tremendous getting involved, as they have been all season, visiting schools and training camps.

“The work of the Homeless FA fits very nicely with the Trust’s desire to improve lives through the power of football and we’re delighted to be associated with them.”

Heaton joined Marvin Elliott and Liam Fontaine in holding a short question-and-answer session with the participants after training. Throughout the project, they will enjoy five training sessions at Failand, and have the opportunity to earn a qualification.

On top of that, two will be chosen to represent England at the Homeless World Cup in Poland later this year.

City midfielder Paul Anderson said: “They’ve been through some tough times in their lives but when you’re out there having a kickaround it grounds you; it’s a level playing field. I think everyone enjoyed themselves.”

Lucas Morgan Runs For Charity

Bristol City Community Trust would like to extend congratulations to keen footballer and City supporter Lucas Morgan.

The young enthusiast dribbled around his school’s cycle track to raise funds for Red Nose Day at the end of March.

Bristol City FC donated two tickets to the Bolton Wanderers game to assist with his fundraising.

Lucas has been attending one of the Trust’s player development centres at Abbeywood School on a Tuesday evening for over a year now and also plays for local grassroots club Avon Athletic.

If you are interested in signing up a child, aged 5-8 or 9-12, then please contact the Community Trust on 0117 963 0636 or watch this small clip.

Amid the heartache at Ashton Gate as City were relegated to League One, there was a silver lining for one young supporter last night.

Matthew Smith, aged nine, won a Gold Star award from the Bristol Post newspaper after having one of his legs amputated and beating cancer.

And as an added bonus, on hearing his story, City invited Matthew to be a mascot in front of 12,000 fans last night, enjoying a kickaround with his beloved players and leading them out on to the pitch.

After walking out on crutches and posing for the cameras, the delighted youngster said: “I saw a lot of fans and the floodlights were bright and I was nervous.

“But I had a brilliant time. I was passing the ball around on the pitch with the other mascots. I also had a look around the whole stadium and got the players’ autographs.”

His father Colin Smith said it had been a dream come true for his son.

“He was really chuffed and you could see it meant a lot to him,” he said.

After developing leg pains, tests revealed Matthew had bone cancer. There was hope that his leg could be saved through chemotherapy but the tumour spread up his thigh, giving doctors no option but to amputate.

Since his operation in April last year, Matthew has learnt to walk again using a prosthetic leg and everyone at Ashton Gate was delighted to see the local fan on the pitch last night.

Bristol City Community Trust are Looking For Employers

Bristol City Community Trust has successfully been running its Education Department with approximately 100 students, for nearly two years. Thanks to the fantastic work done by the students, staff and volunteers, we are delighted to say that several of our students have been offered places at some of the country’s top universities such as Loughborough, Exeter, Bath and Birmingham, enabling them to fulfil their future ambitions working in the world of sport. Others have decided to combine studying part time whilst working in specific sports coaching roles, and some are looking for opportunities away from sport.

All our students, who will be at least 18 years old, have a wide range of skills and abilities. They will either have gained a BTEC level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (equivalent to 3 A levels) or an NVQ Level 3 in Coaching, Teaching and Instructing football. This is where YOU may be able to help the Trust by continuing to build on their excellent work by giving these young people the opportunity to work.

We are looking for employers who have or who could create vacancies either full time, part time, apprenticeships or work experience. Do you own or work for a company who could help? Students are available to undertake work experience at any time, although they will only be available for employment when they complete their current course in July.

If you think you could help us, please contact ian.parkes@bcfc.co.uk either by phone or email for more details. We would love to hear from you.
